Creativity Support Tools

Since its inception, the field of human-computer interaction has concentrated on developing techniques that enhance productivity. Our work is pioneering a new direction of research to understand how to enhance creativity. Creativity is a valued commodity throughout many domains where producing creative outcomes is both expected and desired. Our research is investigating the design, implementation, and evaluation of interface representations, interaction techniques, and supporting tools that foster creativity. Our current work is grounded in the design domains, as these domains are replete with creative activity. Example projects include developing interfaces that enable designers to work with multiple ideas in parallel, knowledge management systems to promote design reuse, and interactive sketching tools to enable rapid exploration of the design space.
